ESS1 (5-8) POC-3 - Explain how Earth events ( over time and abruptly) can bring about changes in the Earths surface: landforms, ocean floor, rock features, or climate. 3a- Evaluating slow processes ( weathering, erosion, mountain building, sea floor spreading) to determine how the Earth has changed and will continue to change over time
Context of Lesson:
In this lesson the teacher will be leading a discussion on plate tectonics, and giving the students notes for throughout the class. Plate tectonics is an important concept of the changing earth and the students will be receiving a lot of information on them today in class. The students will get a note sheet which the teacher will be going through in front of the class on the overhead and helping the students fill in. The teacher will be stopping the students periodically throughout the class to ask them questions to get them participating in the class. The students will be responsible for the notes given for the day, but anything that is said during the class that is not on the note sheet can also be covered on the unit test. The students will be urged to use their textbooks during to the class to help them answer any questions which the teacher asks them.
Opportunities to Learn:
Depth of Knowledge
DOK Level 1 Recall and Reproduction- In this lesson the students will simply be recalling and recognizing facts, terms and definitions based on plate tectonics.
Prerequisite Knowledge
Students should know that plate tectonics exist based on the last lesson which the students did on the layers of the Earth. The group which described the crust should have let the students know that the earth is made up of different plates. The students will be gaining knowledge about the different types of boundaries that happen due to plate tectonics, and this may be new information to the students.
Plans for Differentiating Instruction
Advanced Student- This student may be looking ahead in the book while the teacher is in front of the class conducting her discussion and note session on plate tectonics. If these students are going far ahead on the notes that they are receiving then the teacher will be asking questions to the class. The teacher may ask the advanced students may complex questions, go on with their notes, then come back to this student and allow him or her to explain their answer to the class. Lower Level Student- This student will be trying vigorously to keep up with the notes that the teacher is giving. If the teacher wants them to participate in the class discussion then the teacher must give the kid a heads up on when she is going to be asking a question to them. The teacher may ask those students one of the questions which are found on the note sheet already this way the students will be familiar with the material and be able to participate in the class.
Accommodations and modifications
For the lower level students when the teacher is giving the notes in front of the class, she will be handing out the students a copy of the notes which are missing key phrases and terms. For the lower level students the teacher should put the page number in where the student can find the information to fill in this blank on the note sheet. This way if the students miss some of the notes then they will be able to find the answer on their own. This will also give the students an opportunity to try to participate in the class discussion.
Environmental factors
The students will be sitting in rows while the teacher is writing the notes on the overhead.
The students will be predicting the answers on the note sheet by looking ahead in their books to find the answers, as well as using their prior knowledge to fill in the blanks on the note sheet.
The students will be able to identify and describe concepts on plate tectonics and questions relating to plate tectonics.
Students will be working on their note taking skills which will be important to their success in high school and college.
Instruction:
Opening:
Written on the board the teacher will have the question "what are plate tectonics?". The students will write down what they believe they know about plate tectonics for the few minutes which consist of the teacher taking attendance.
The teacher will then be asking the students what they believe plate tectonics consist of. The students will probably have a few answers, but the teacher will stress how many concepts plate tectonics covers.
The teacher will then pass out the note sheet and tell the students that there will be a teacher led discussion today in class and that the students will be filling in the note sheet as they go along.
Engagement:
The engagement for this class will be the teacher going through the note sheet with the students. Before the class the teacher will have blanked out words or key phrases before giving the students the note sheet. This way the students don't simply have the notes and can zone out, the students will forced to follow along with the class and write in the blank spaces.
The note sheet is made up of some basic knowledge on plate tectonics for the students to learn. The sheet contains some questions which will allow the teacher time to stop the class and address these questions.
While the class is going on it is the teachers job to be able to answer any of the students questions or misconceptions which they have on either the note sheet or plate tectonics in general.
The students role during this class will be to participate when the teacher asks the questions, as well as following along on the note sheet and filling in the correct answers.
When it comes time to the questions on the note sheet, the teacher will give the students a few minutes to think about the answer, and then ask the students what they believe the answer is.
Also throughout the lesson the teacher will be asking the students to try to answer the blanks on the note sheet without the teacher stating the answers. The students will be allowed to use their text books for this, but when they are stuck this is when the teacher will be providing the students with the answers.
This class is more like a teacher led discussion, but each blank on the note sheet is like a question which the students will be able to fill in.
Closure:
The teacher will then ask the students to fill out an Exit slips with the question "How do plate tectonics effect your every day life?"
This class will end with the teacher giving the students 4 questions which are to be completed for homework. The students will have time at the end of the class to work on this homework assignment.
